Russell on ‘Test’

The excited angler left for Lyndhurst on Tuesday afternoon, the 7th of September for an overnight stay in readiness for the Wednesday on the “Test”.

After a restless night, far too excited to sleep, a hearty breakfast was enjoyed before departing for the famous Broadlands beat on the Test. On arriving, it was every thing I had dreamed of and some more…………absolutely exquisite. After some local advice, I started to fish the Rookery Beat and was advised “beaded daddy’s” or GRHE nymphs would do the job, but one can’t fish the Test with Nymphs (my opinion only), so, after just a couple of casts I went on the Dry. Several fish rose to my fly but wouldn’t just take it, so,  slightly frustrated but still wearing a big smile we stopped for lunch at the fishing lodge on the beat. After lunch, I continued with various dries then tried a CDC Shuttlecock and fourth run down…………..a little sip………..a strike……….and then all hell broke loose. Finally, after a 15 minute fight, a fin perfect 4 1/2 pound wild brownie came to the net…………..FANTASTIC. After 30 minutes calming down I tried once more to no avail, but heh! I went …….I saw……….I fished………I conquered. What a Fantastic day and one I shall never forget. A special thanks to those who invited me (If you read this blog you’ll know who you are)
