This year we returned to the land of song for our weekend away and decided to focus on Trawsfynydd lake for the main competition and allow those attending a massive choice of rivers, lakes and sea to fish in the days before and after the main event.
Thankfully we were all able to stay at the same venue, the Oakley arms at Maentwrog. The rooms and cottages were all extremely comfortable and the food good with generous portions and of course with a plentiful supply of assorted ales!
The weather forecast did not promise ideal fishing weather with rather too much wind and sun but we would have to make the best of it as usual. Ken had decided to create a number of teams for this year’s event with members and boat partners allegedly chosen at random. Strangely though, Ken somehow ended up with a boat partner who is a legend in his own lifetime namely Sonny Owen, Welsh international and local resident who knows every stone on lake! He managed to converse with Sonny without the services of an interpreter and fish most of the lake during the day!
So, the day dawned and off we went. The water levels were low and the temperature high and we were warned that we were in for a tough day and so it proved. Here you see us at the dock ready for the off.
Sadly there were a number of blanks and catches were low but spirits were high. The conditions were far from ideal although a number of methods worked from dries to blobs.
At the dinner that evening Ken revealed the winners if the various prizes. The heaviest individual bag went to Russ Heath with 3 fish. He is seen receiving the shield from Chairman Pete.
The heaviest individual fish prize for which the winner received a new trophy kindly donated by John Bergdahl was won by Richard Benham with a rainbow of 2lbs 2ozs.
The final trophies were for the team winners who showed remarkable skill and consistency by all managing to catch fish. The team consisted of Stu Nichol, Tony Pawley, Russ Heath and yours truly.
So, all in all a great weekend and thanks to Ken for organising it all. I believe everyone enjoyed it and we look forward to the next one.
Incidentally, I believe a new record was set this year in that three members all went home with their room keys on them! Is this an age thing or were they just tired out after a hectic weekend?
