Yesterday, following encouraging reports of good catches on the fishery web site a small group of us decided to test out the hype for ouselves. The raiding party consisted of Ken Giles, Martin Smith, Tony Woods and yours truly.
A reasonably warm day with a NE wind and a good nymphing ripple greeted us on arrival and to say we were keen to get started would be any understatement. There appeared to be scorching of the grass between Martin’s car and the lake shore!
As buzzers are in abundance on the lake we all started with suitable copies on long leaders fishing them round ‘ on the wind’. All four of us were immediately into fish within minutes and this hot action continued throughout the day. The quality of the fish was superb and samples ranged from 2 1/2 lbs to almost double figures with plenty of 3 to 4 lbs fish. Check your backing knots before going as you are likely to see it vanishing through the rod rings rapidly!
Here you can see 3/4 of the team in action.
Highlight of the day was the capture of a rare brown trout by ‘hot rod of the day’ Tony Woods as you can see below.
By the end of the day we were staggered to realise that we had caught and released 54 trout between us. All on buzzer patterns and floating lines – what a superb day. A certain brown trout catcher had a personal record day with 19 fish to his own rod. He complained of an aching arm by evening that day!
Take note that Angling Trust individual members will receive a 10% discount on their day ticket.
